a book birthday party, stickers, a new comic & keeping rhythm when the world is shaking apart
hey hey, I hope you all are hanging in there.
trying to stay informed of the horrors occurring abroad (and the extremely alarming mass censorship of all things pro-peace that’s taking place domestically) while still maintaining the ability to function has been hard this month.
the adult comic I released a few weeks ago has garnered over $800 USD worth of downloads from over 11 countries. half of which was sent to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund. thank you, thank you, thank you for supporting me enough to allow me to do things like this… my internationalist heart is full.
here’s a new comic I sketched out a long time ago that seems painfully fitting now:
(if the gallery of images is cutting off for you, you can view it in full here!)
I suppose the joke is that it's easy to feel powerless, to feel rage and then burn out, or to act like all is well in order to create a false peace, but none of these things will save us. we must hold each other close, breathe, and act out of love & not anger, so that we are able to act at all.
related: Los Angeles folks: save the date for the Friday after next, cuz there’s a…
it definitely feels strange to have a celebration against the backdrop of genocide (Palestine, but also Sudan, Armenia, Congo, Manipur, and elsewhere) … but that is so much of what COOK LIKE YOUR ANCESTORS is about: maintaining your cultural heritage in the face of violence, assimilation, erasure, and loss, and celebrating all people in all their intricacies and histories.
so this will be an event that honors precisely that, to breathe in the pain of the world, and hopefully breathe out something like strength and solidarity, especially at this time of year when we are so celestially close to our ancestors…
there will be chicha morada, really nice music, safety for all, and my mom is making pound cake. so if you can, come thru <3
some other quick book things:
if you want a signed copy, this is your chance, as I’ll be signing away all night, and Secret Headquarters will ship those copies shortly after~
we also just recently unveiled this sticker sheet (that comes with every order of the book) full of fighting heirloom vegetables:
the book also got featured in an article with other excellent comic cookbooks over by the lovely folks at Booklist that you can read here.
that’s it for this month…!
I’ve got deadlines to beat, and a bunch of new dope patrons to please, so keep safe, keep strong, and see you next month <3
Cute stickers!
